This Wednesday April 2nd we passed a big milestone in the Aquaponics project. First we finally confirmed that our bell siphon worked. Second we drained out all the old green water from the containers and washed them out. I think that we are almost ready to get the tilapia and get the system up and running. I am so excited that we are almost completed with this project. It has taken us over a year now and we are almost complete. The girls are writing up a permission slip to go and collect the Tilapia next Friday and we are one step closer the being a more sustainable school.

The Saint Francis Garden has really evolved from just an idea, to a pile of soil, to a fully formed and beautiful garden. This was a long and complicated but fun process. I really enjoy the time that we spend in the garden every morning. Another thing that I enjoy about the garden is my teacher Ms. Enriquez asking us to spot the differences in the plants from the day before. It allows us to actually see the process that is happening. A new addition to the garden is the aquaponics system designed by a fellow classmate David Coloumbe. The aquaponics hasn't been installed yet but we plan on starting it soon and it looks fantastic. Overall I am very proud of the garden and I think that everybody that was involved did a fantastic job and if you are ever at Sacred Hearts School In Lahaina Maui then you should definitely take a look.
(If you are interested in checking out David Coloumbes blog page just press here http://www.weebly.com/weebly/main.php ) On Wednesday December 12 the Sacred Hearts School 8th grade class went on a Learning Journey to Seabury Hall In upcountry Maui. We went their to learn about their high school program and their athletics program. The day started out with getting up at five o'clock in the morning to get to J.P.'s house by six where we took a one and a half hour long drive to get to the school by 7:30. Once we were there we were given our student to follow for the day. Brandon and I were assigned to the same person. The first class that he took us to was the English class. Their English class is completely different than ours, their teacher said that she doesn't care about spelling and grammar, she just wants her students to get their thoughts and ideas across without having to worry about anything else. After that we went to the Honors Geometry class where The teacher put on a trial about a math equation. I had no idea what anybody was talking about but they seemed very smart. After that everybody had a break with cookies and candy. then our shadow took us to his theater class where he let us climb around on the place where they hang the lights high above the stage. Then we had a amazing lunch with chicken rice and noodles. They even have their own soda fountain with juice. Then we went home with a full belly and happy with our trip to Seabury.
On Tuesday December 3rd, the seventh and eighth grade classes had a very special visitor. Our visitor was the producer of the movie The Hiding Place. His name was ,Bill Brown and he came into our class to talk about Corrie ten Boom and how much faith she had in God. One quote from the book and the movie, that I really liked then and I still like it today is a quote Betsy had said during their time at the concentration camp. "Thank God for the Fleas". This was said because when all the inmates were reading the Bible in their cell a Nazi officer walked by and saw them reading it but was to afraid to go in and punish them because of the massive amount of fleas. After that Bill went on to talk about his time filming with Corrie and about the movie premier. Bill browns visit really got me thinking about my faith in God because I probably would not be able to do something like that.
Hello people of earth, Monday November 25 my teacher, Ms. Enriquez had all of my classmates and I research a man named Billy Graham. At first I thought it would just be an assignment that we would do and then we would just move on, but this was different, I think that this article will actually affect my life. Billy Graham is a 95 year old man who is considered to be a religious icon by many people.
There was one quote in the article that really affected me "All the creatures in hell believed in Jesus but they had no faith." That really affected me because as a kid you allays hear that as long as you believe in Jesus you will go to heaven, you never hear that you have to have faith as a kid. I am so glad I read that article and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. This Wednesday November 21 my 8th grade class and I went to a Latin mass from 8:00 to 9:10 Am. It was a very different mass, Canon Moreau did all of these old traditions like the priest feeding us the bread and he performed the entire mass with his back to us. After mass Cannon Moreau came to our class to answer any questions that we had about the Latin mass. When we started talking about what he wore during mass, some things he wore we're a fascia which was like a scarf he wore around his chest and Amis which he called his helmet of protection agents the devil. After that happened he brought up a subject That really got me thinking, "What language do you think we will speak in Heaven." That was Cannon Moreau's visit to our school.
Tuesday November 19 was an amazing day. Saint Anthony School came to our school to learn from us about the Hokulea ,ancient hawaiian traditions, and how to make a website. I have a feeling that they felt like our class did on our trip to Oahu to visit Holy Nativity School. A lot of things surprised me when they came to visit, like how big their class was I thought that all of that schools classes were like five or six kids each. Another thing that surprised me was how cool they thought our playground was, I guess that supports my theory of how they felt like we were feeling on our trip to Oahu because we thought that their playground was amazing. I feel bad for the teacher though because she probably thought that her students would be with us all day but we had to go to other classes without them, so the seventh grade had to find something to do with them. Our day with them was fantastic and I hope we can do it again soon.
On November 7 most of my class and I went to Oahu for the day to visit students at Holy Nativity School. We went there to teach the fifth and sixth grade students about reforming education. We were suppose to get to the Kahului airport by 6:30 Am to catch our 7:30 flight to Honolulu International Airport. Once we arrived at he airport a teacher gave us ride to the school where we presented to the students. Once we had finished presenting we went out to recess, their playground is amazing. Then we had a delicious lunch of chili and rice. After that the students there wanted to present something to us, so they told us some ideas that they had about carriculam and showed us their school garden. After that we went on a tour of the coast line for a few hours seeing the sights. Once that happened we returned to the airport where we waited two hours for our flight home. Over all it was a great trip and I can't wait until the students come to Maui.
On Wednesday October 30th the seventh and eighth grade classes went to an installation at the MACC called "Taken By Wonder". This was one of the best learning journeys of the year. It is an installation created by West Bruce. The best thing about this exhibit was what he called The Fort, It was this huge building made of recycled wood and bottles. It was really fun discovering all of the hidden rooms that West Bruce added into the building and then scaring all the people that came by. There were also secrete codes hidden throughout all of the building and were pieces of paper to decode them. After we explored the fort for about 45 minutes we moved to the next and final station where we got materials to build random structures with foam core and coffee stirrers which everybody at your table combined to make a super structure. The people at my table Carter, David, James, Brandon and I ended up making a huge military compound. Then we all went back to school where we discussed our amazing learning journey.
Thursday October 24 for the fifth and final time, we went to the Lahaina Yacht club for junior sailing class. It was the best class of all; we actually went past the reef on our Open Bic sailboats. Once we were out past the reef, we did a couple of races when JP decided to be a cheater. Once he got close to any boat he would push it back. He did get what was coming to him though because he got caught on a huge rope connected to a boat and couldn't come free. Once we finished our racing out past the reef, we sailed in for lunch when Carter and David ended up in the right place at the right time. They caught a huge wave all the way in to shore. Then we had the most amazing lunch of pepperoni pizza and salad with delicious carrots and onions. The fleet captain, Curtis, allowed us to do what ever we wanted so we all went out and "pirated" other sailboats. What you do to pirate other boats is when you have two people on your sailboat one stays and controls the boat and drops the other person at another person's boat. They flip the boat and the person controlling the boat comes and picks them up and they ride off into the sunset. Now the 8th grade class is trying to plan another five sailing classes, but even if we don't get to do it this was a
