Today the 7th and 8th grade classes went to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center to see the exhibit "Taken by Wonder." 28 year old, Wes Bruce, built a fort inside the art museum that included little pieces that represented a culture. There were many hidden rooms and it was so much fun exploring them. Wes also made 15 amazing paintings in only three days. After a tour of the fort, we went to a classroom to make our own creative structures; when we were all individually done we had to combine them! Carter, Brandon, Max, James and I built a zombie fort.
Out past the reef, blue open water. Sailing for the win. Yesterday was our last day sailing and it was superb! In the morning the wind was weak but towards the end of the day, it picked up and we were having a jolly good time. We went out past the reef and raced around two trimarans. I came in first twice and second once. For lunch we had pizza! For the last 2 hours of the day, Curtis gave us the freedom of doing whatever we wanted. We "pirated" other boats, which is when we jump on other peoples' boats and capsize them. One person stays on the boat to pick the person up after flipping the boat. Danno taught me how to tie a sheep shank knot which is used when repelling down a cliff to retrieve your rope. We had the best time ever!!!
This Friday the 7th and 8th grade class went up to Honokawai Valley to plant native species and learn about their uses. First Puanani started with a puli then broke off into groups to start weeding the bed we would plant in. I used a sickle to cut the roots of the grass then Carter came with the rake and took all the weeds away. After all the weeding was done and the area was clear we had lunch and took a break. When lunch was over we re hydrated and got our tools to plant. Carter and I were using digging sticks that are used to loosen up the hard soil, then the dirt is dug out with the shovel. we planted a bush that can be crushed up and put in tide pools to make the fish drowsy and slow.
We all learned a lot and had a lot of fun. Sailing last week Thursday was so much fun! Towards the end of the day the wind picked up and Carter and I were flying. We had decided to sail together so we put our feet in the foot straps and leaned far to one side to keep the bout balanced. Despite our weight of about 260 lbs we were going pretty fast and at times were passing other people. We went out past the reef into deeper waters and it was awesome. I am so excited to go back next week.
