On Friday, September 27 our class took a learning journey to O'o Farms and learned so much. I learned how to chop firewood and build a fire: We collected kindling to help start the fire, then made a pyramid shape with the logs so the air could flow through. I learned how to make a great pizza with fresh ingredients from the farm. It was delicious! Our whole class then went to sleep together in a yurt. In the morning we got up to see the sun rise. We all helped to make breakfast and we made another fire. Then we took a tour of how O'o Farms creates coffee from the plant to the cup. Afterwards we learned about good and bad insects (good: parasitic wasps & ladybugs) (bad: slugs, moths, snails) The parasitic wasps eat the bad bugs and luckily there were a ton of them around the farm (a 4:1 ratio). Then we sadly got in our cars and headed home.
On the 26 of September the class of 2014 walked down to their second sailing lesson. We started out by dividing into two groups the experienced and the inexperienced. The inexperienced group learned more about tacking and jibing. The experienced group learned more about rigging a sail. After that we got in our boats and were off while the sailing instructors set up the corse we caught waves on our Bics. We then raced with barely any wind which got boring so we went in to lunch. After a great lunch of chicken fingers, we got back in our boats and started sailing. It was SUPER windy so it was a boat load of fun. We sailed and capsized a lot for another hour. All in all it was another great day at the yacht club.
On September 18, 2013 the Sacred Hearts Class of 2014 walked down to the Lahaina Yacht Club and took our first sailing class. We started off the day by learning how to tie knots. Then we learned how to sail the fastest using the wind. After that we were taught the parts of a sail boat and how to rig a sail. Next we put on our lifejackets and we were into the water where we learned how to tack and jibe. After a few hours of sailing we docked and cleaned our sailing equipment. We then had a scrumptious lunch of spaghetti with red sauce. It was about 1:15 pm so we headed back to school and started counting down the days till the next sailing lesson.
On September 10, 2013, Sacred Hearts Eighth grade students recorded "Where In The World Are The Whales.", a song about whales at Lahaina Sound, a recording studio owned by Lynn Peterson. The studio was owned by George Benson before Lynn bought it. The song will be on Steve Grimes' newest album.
On the 27 of September the eighth grade class is going to O'o Farms in Kula to learn about organic farming and locally grown produce. Our class will have free time to run around and eat pizza baked from the locally grown produce in a brick oven. We will be spending the night in yurts. In the morning the students will plant and weed. We will leave on the 28th in the afternoon.
